EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 5 Northwestern welcomes the DePaul Blue Demons to the Combe Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon for a 5 p.m. dual match. The two Chicago-area rivals have met six times in their history, with the Wildcats winning all six.
Last year, the `Cats traveled to DePaul and walked away with a 6-1 victory.
Today's match against the Blue Demons will be the first to count towards Northwestern's 2005 team record. The `Cats hosted Wisconsin, Penn State and Illinois-Chicago last weekend, but no team scores were kept.
Although no team scores were recorded, the matches did offer the `Cats one last opportunity to knock off any remaining rust - and knock it off they did. Northwestern won 17 of 19 singles matches and swept its nine doubles competitions. Freshman Alexis Conill (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) led the `Cats with three singles wins and also posted a perfect 2-0 doubles mark.
Freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) - the No. 1 and No. 4 singles players in the nation - both went 2-0 in singles action. The duo also lived up to its No. 1 doubles ranking, defeating No. 27 Katie McGaffigan and Lindsay Martin of Wisconsin 8-6.
Junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day), No. 49 sophomore Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), graduate student Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) and senior Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) all finished 2-0 in singles over the weekend as well.
After facing the Blue Demons, the `Cats will have about 10 days off before traveling to Texas A&M to face the Aggies Jan. 29. Texas A&M enters the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.
