EVANSTON, Ill. - She's back.
By not dropping a single point to Wisconsin's Katie McGaffigan en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win, Northwestern freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) showed why she is the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation Saturday at day two of the Wildcat Duals.
The flawless victory came against a quality opponent in McGaffigan, who is the No. 52 singles player in the nation.
It was Cohen's first competition since falling in her last match of the fall back in October. Despite that loss, Cohen still came into her Saturday match ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles.
The second half of that No. 1 doubles team -- junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) -- was nearly flawless for the `Cats in her singles match as well. Grier ran away with the first set, 6-0, before closing the door on the Badgers' Caitlin Burke with a 6-1 second-set win for the victory. Grier is the No. 4 singles player in the nation.
After winning her first set fairly easily, 6-2, graduate student Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) fell behind 4-3 in the second frame. But Vladea rallied to win the next three games, taking the match 6-3, 6-3.
Not to be outdone by her classmate Cohen, fellow freshman Alexis Conill (Ft. Lauderdale/Cardinal Gibbons) cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Chelsea Nusslock.
The crowd at Combe Tennis Center was also treated to a pair of longer, more intense matches by senior Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and junior Feriel Esseghir (Sarasota, Fla./Brickhouse Academy).
Yung dropped her first set to Kaylan Caiati, 4-6. The senior made things look easy from there though, winning the next to sets 6-1, 6-1 to take the match.
Esseghir looked to be in control early against Wisconsin's Nicole Beck, winning the first set, 6-0. The Florida native dropped two close tie-breaker sets to follow though. Beck took the second set 7-6 (7-4) before posting another 7-6 (7-4) win in the third set for the victory. Both competitors were totally spent after the marathon, three-hour match.
Northwestern also swept its doubles competition against Illinois- Chicago. Cohen teamed with junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) to win 8-2. Senior Kristi Roemer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and Conilll won 8-2 as well. Yung and Esseghir took their doubles match by a score of 8-1.
