EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 5 Northwestern started its spring schedule with a perfect day. The Wildcats posted six singles victories against Illinois-Chicago and three wins in doubles competition against Penn State to go a combined 9-0 on day one of the Wildcat Duals Friday. All six singles victories came in straight sets.

Northwestern started the day in doubles action against familiar Big Ten foe Penn State. Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Burlington Central) and Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) defeated Hussain and Spence, 8-4. Kristi Roemer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) teamed with Feriel Esseghir (Sarasota, Fla./Brickhouse Academy) to take down Shular and Be Vard, 8-4. Alexis Conill (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla/Cardinal Gibbons) and Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) ensured NU's perfect doubles run with a 8-2 victory over Harclerode and Niculescu.

Head Coach Claire Pollard slated six of her players for singles competition against Illinois-Chicago and all six came through with a win. Peisel wasted little time disposing of her opponent, flawlessly winning 6-0, 6-0. Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) added an impressive performance of her own, dispatching of The Flames' Christina Oum, 6-0, 6-3. Prousis - the No. 49 ranked singles player nationally - defeated Iris Jacklin 6-1, 6-2.

Vladea, Esseghir and Prousis all notched straight-set singles victories as well.

All in all, five `Cats posted victories in both singles and doubles action.

Pollard said Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) - the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked singles players nationally - could see action tomorrow against Wisconsin.

Cohen and Grier - the No. 1 ranked doubles team nationally - could also take the court against the Badgers in doubles action tomorrow. Pollard was unsure of what lineup she would use for the rest of the weekend.

A complete schedule of the weekend's remaining competition is listed below.
