EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern began the fall season over the weekend in the Rice Invitational Tournament, as a number of Wildcats came out of the gates with strong performances.
In Friday action, Northwestern was dominating in both singles and doubles action, going a combined 8-1 on opening day. Some of the key performances included junior Cristelle Grier -- the No. 1 player in the nation -- winning her first two matches in straight sets. Sophomore Alexis Prousis and freshman Audra Cohen also won their first two singles matches in straight sets.
On Saturday, Grier was tested in a singles match by her teammate, Prousis. Grier won the first set 6-3, but Prousis responded by winning the second set 6-4. Grier showed why she is the top player in the country though, closing out the tie-break, 10-4.
In other action on Saturday in the blue singles draw, Cohen continued to impress as a freshman, winning in straight sets against Blair DiSesa of Rice, 6-3, 6-3.
Doubles action on Saturday included Vladea and Prousis defeating Langer and Chay of SMU, 8-2 and then following that win up with a win against DiSesa and Patenaude, 8-3.
In finals action for doubles on Sunday, Cohen and Grier defeated Vladea and Prousis by a count of 8-6. Senior Kristi Roemer teamed up with junior Jamie Peisel to record a win on Sunday too, as they beat Langer and Chay, 9-8(5).
One of the more stunning upsets on Sunday came in a showdown between Cohen and Grier. The rookie, Cohen, beat Grier in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Prousis also notched a win in Sunday singles action by beating DiSesa, 6-4, 7-6(1).
