Wildcats Place 21st in Griak Gold Race

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Led by Top-100 finishes from freshman Marie Grabinski and senior Diana Hossfeld, the Northwestern cross country team finished 21st out of 29 teams in the Women's Gold Race (Division I college) at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon.

Saturday was NU's first time running a championship-distance 6-kilometer race this season; in two previous intercollegiate meets, the Wildcats had gone just 4K.
Providence ran away with the team title, scoring 58 points to outrun second-place Arizona State (81). Among Big Ten teams, Penn State was ninth (282 points), host Minnesota was 13th (369), Wisconsin was 17th (466), Northwestern was 21st (554) and Ohio State was 24th (618).
Kim Smith allowed the Lady Friars to bring home the individual title, as well. The senior clocked a course-record 20:10 to win by 23 seconds over Missy Buttry of Wartburg College.
Among NU runners, Grabinski was 72nd overall in a time of 22:49, while Hossfeld was 86th in 23:00. Seniors Lesley Meade (102nd in 23:13) and Kyna Forkins (122nd in 23:31) also scored, as did freshman Alison Coren (172nd in 24:20).
Northwestern will run again next weekend at the Pre-Regional meet in Peoria, Ill.
