ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After allowing three goals in the first 25 minutes of Friday's match with No. 25 Michigan, Northwestern fought back hard to try and draw level. And with mere minutes remaining, the 'Cats looked like they had in fact knotted things up with the Wolverines.
Only one problem: as the ball went into the goal, the linesman's flag was up for offsides.
Thus did the score remain 3-2 in Michigan's favor, and that's how the match ended Friday at the U-M Soccer Field.
According to NU coach Jenny Haigh, a slow start proved to be NU's doom in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
"We played flat in the first half, and that was disappointing," she said. "We allowed them to get out on us, but after that we showed that we could compete with them. We just need to put together that effort for 90 minutes."
Coming off three straight shutouts, Northwestern (4-3-0, 0-1-0) was quick to surrender a goal Friday. Just 8:25 into the match, Michigan's Melissa Dobbyn fired a shot from 20 yards out that beat NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones to the upper left corner of the goal.
The Wildcats came back to tie it less than six minutes later, when an Ashleigh Garmon attempt found its way into the goal. It was the senior's second goal of the season.
The deadlock lasted all of 2:40, before Michigan (4-2-1, 1-0-0) went back on top thanks to Kate Morgan's goal. Nearly nine minutes later, the Wolverines doubled their lead when Therese Heaton scored her seventh of the season.
Northwestern was able to get one back in the 69th minute when freshman Kelsey Hans scored her sixth goal of the season off a cross from Shannon Schneeman.
Jones had a big day in goal for Northwestern, making nine saves as Michigan outshot the Wildcats 21-7.
"I thought some of our defenders played well today," said Haigh, singling out Tori Bohannon and Katie Gunderson for their play. "I think we can build from this game, and now we go to Michigan State looking to get a split for the weekend."
The 'Cats will tangle with the Spartans in East Lansing Sunday at noon (11 a.m. Central).
