EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern outshot Samford 19-3 in a women's soccer match Friday afternoon at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, but it was freshman Kelsey Hans who provided the only scoring as the Wildcats escaped with a 1-0 victory.
The win improved the 'Cats to 3-2 on the season, while Samford remained winless at 0-4.
Hans is quickly proving herself to be a precious commodity up front for Northwestern. This was her fifth goal in five collegiate appearances.
Her goal on Friday came in the 33rd minute, when she was able to wriggle free of a defender about 15 yards out and fired a right-footed shot past Samford goalkeeper Crystal Royall's left.
That was all the 'Cats would need. Goalkeeper Whitney Jones was not tested as her teammates continuously threatened the Bulldog goal.
Northwestern will be back in action Sunday at noon, hosting Southeast Missouri State in the first of three matches at the Thomas Complex.
