EVANSTON, Ill. - Incoming freshman wrestlers Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio) and Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill.) turned in a pair of top performances at the 2004 ASICS/Vaughan Junior Freestyle National Championships on July 25, 2004 in Fargo, N.D.
Fox, the No. 3 ranked heavyweight in the country, defeated top-ranked and defending national champion Matt Fields, 4-1, to become the new national champion.
"Dustin is one of the best heavyweights in the country, period," NU head coach Tim Cysewski said. "He will most likely be slated to start for us at heavyweight next year."
Fox adds this national championship to an already impressive resume. While he dominated the freestyle competition this year, in 2003 he took home the title in the Greco-Roman division of the Junior National Championships.
With national championships in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle, Fox has displayed his versatility and ability to excel at a variety of styles. He was a Junior Greco-Roman All-American in 2004, and a Junior Freestyle All-American in 2003. Fox is also a two-time high school state champion and three-time high school state place-winner.
Fellow incoming freshman Tamillow gained national recognition at the championships, as well, recording a fifth-place finish in the 189-pound division.
"Mike really turned in a great performance at nationals," Cysewski said. "We're excited to work with him, and he'll have a shot to start at 185 pounds."
Tamillow comes to Northwestern highly regarded as well after finishing as the high school state runner-up in 2003, and winning the Illinois state championship in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Fox and Tamillow headline an incoming freshman class that ranks in the top 20 recruiting classes in the country. Jordan Brown (Solon, Ohio), Brandon Lozdoski (Machesney Park, Ill.), and Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J.) round out the incoming class.
