EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) of baseball and sophomore Kristen Amegin (W. Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) have been named this week's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Happ pitched his third complete game of the season, winning game one vs. Ohio State ace Josh Newman, 4-1. Happ gave up six hits in the nine-inning masterpiece, allowing one earned run to drop his team-best ERA to 2.96. He struck out five in the contest, giving him a Big Ten-leading 96 on the year.
His 96 Ks set a personal single-season high and are just 13 shy of the NU single-season record. Happ also set a career high for innings pitched with 85.0. The award is the third of his career and the second of the season.
Amegin came up clutch not once, but twice in the Wildcats' Big Ten Tourney win over Minnesota. Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh following a night-long rain delay, Amegin shot a run-scoring single into left field to tie the game. Then in the bottom of the 11th frame, Amegin cranked a three-run, walk-off home run over the center field fence.
She went 3-for-6 in the contest, with all three of her hits coming on Saturday morning following the delay.
The award is the first of Amegin's career.
