COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State starter Mike Madsen allowed just one hit through the first five innings, going on to defeat Northwestern 9-1 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader in Columbus. OSU swept the two games, winning game one 4-2. First baseman Mark Ori plated NU's only run, as the Wildcats had just three hits in the game.

Just like they did in game one, Ohio State (30-20 overall, 17-10 Big Ten) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Anderson led off the bottom half with a double down the left field line. He came around to score on Steve Caravati's slow roller to shortstop. Caravati was out at first, but the run crossed the plate.

Buckeye hurler Mike Madsen cruised through the first four innings, allowing two base runners (both walks), and not allowing a hit.

After giving up back-to-back hits to lead off the game, Kontos retired the next nine Buckeyes before issuing his second walk. OSU put runners on the corner with one out, but Kontos struck one batter out and got a fly ball to left field to end the inning.

Designated hitter Dan Brauer broke up Madsen's bid for a no-hitter, lacing a single up the middle with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Madsen left him stranding, getting a fly out to right field to end the inning.

OSU added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, touching Kontos for three hits. After getting the first two outs of the fifth inning, Kontos issued his third walk of the game, which was followed by three singles. Two of those singles never left the infield, but did plate the two runs.

Freshman Andrew Smith relieved Kontos with two outs in the fifth inning, getting a fly ball to end the Buckeye threat.

Northwestern found the scoring column in the top of the sixth inning, as shortstop Jon Mikrut laced a one-out double to the right field wall to get things started. The Big Ten's leading hitter, Mark Ori, followed with a line-drive single to center field, scoring Mikrut from second. Two easy fly ball outs to right field ended the Wildcat rally.

Smith came out to start the sixth inning, but immediately ran into trouble. The Kentucky native hit the first batter he faced and walked the second. Head coach Paul Stevens called on sophomore Julio Siberio to close the door. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the first hitter he faced singled to center, scoring a run from second. With no outs and runners on first and second, OSU executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners 90-feet. After Siberio walked the bases loaded, Stevens called on junior Evan Blesoff to pitch. Blesoff gave up a two-RBI single, leaving runners on first and third with one out. After a throwing error by Pohlman, which allowed a run to score, another single scored the fifth Buckeye run of the inning.

Stevens went to the bullpen again, this time calling on junior Chris Davidson. Davidson walked the first hitter he faced, got a fly ball for out No. 2, and gave up an RBI single. With runners on first and second and six runs already in, Davidson struck out the third out of the inning.

NU went quietly in the seventh, ending the game and falling to 23-25-1 overall, 12-15 in the Big Ten.

NU and OSU wrap up the four-game series, tomorrow, playing a nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. (EDT).
