EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern has named Matt Brimmer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Brimmer hit an outstanding .583 for the weekend vs. Illinois. The junior was 7-for-12 with two walks and a sacrifice bunt. He scored five runs and had multiple hits in three of the four games. He raised his average 30 points and is now hitting .316, the fourth-best average on the team.
On Sunday, in the final game of the series, Brimmer played a pivotal role, driving in one run and scoring two, and finishing the game 2-for-3, which included a double to right field.
Cooper, a freshman, broke both Northwestern's single-season home run (10) and RBI (41) records during a Wednesday doubleheader at DePaul. She hit a home run in both ends of the double-dip, with the first coming in the 11th inning to break a 0-0 tie.
Cooper currently leads the Big Ten in on-base percentage (.503) and is second in batting average (.380) and slugging percentage (.713).
