EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's women's tennis team members Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) and Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) will compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships held May 24-29 in Athens, Ga., the NCAA announced.
Grier, ranked No. 3 nationally, earned an automatic berth by having the best overall record in the Midwest Region (the top four qualify). The entry is the second for the sophomore; last year, she advanced as far as the quarterfinal round in the tournament.
Forty-fourth-ranked Rush, who received an at-large bid, will be making her third appearance at the tournament. In 2003, the senior fell to the top seed in the first round.
"I am happy for both of them," said head coach Claire Pollard. "They worked hard all year and are being rewarded as such."
Grier and Rush, who compose the No. 3-ranked doubles team, also earned an automatic berth in doubles and will be making their second NCAA trip together.
The Wildcats will take on Illinois-Chicago at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vandy Christie Tennis Center in the NCAA Regional (Team) Championship.
