EAST LANSING, Mich.--Northwestern's 46th-ranked men's tennis team's appearance at the Big Ten Championship came to an end today as it was defeated 4-0 by top-ranked Illinois in the semifinal round.

The fourth-seeded 'Cats (15-9) were unable to avenge a loss earlier in the season to the top-seeded Fighting Illini (27-0), who move on to another championship match.

"I thought our guys hung tough," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "But give Illinois credit, as they are a very good team."

NU found itself in an early hole after losses at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles (No. 2 was abandoned). In the former, Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) were taken down 8-4 by Phil Stolt and Brian Wilson, while in the latter, Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) were beaten 8-3 by Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones.

In singles, Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) was the first to fall, giving up a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Michael Calkins at the three spot. Illinois then increased its lead to 3-0 when Wilson beat Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1.

The final point came at No. 2, where Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge) was dropped 6-2, 6-4 by Stolt.

"It is always sad to lose, but this was not a bad loss in my mind," said Torricelli. "I am still hopeful about the postseason."

The Wildcats will now wait to see if they will receive a bid to the NCAA Championships.
