EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University athletics director Mark Murphy has announced the restructuring of his senior administrative staff, effective July 1, 2004. The moves coincide with the retirement of long-time senior associate athletic director Ken Kraft.

"My senior staff and I have spent a lot of time discussing this restructuring," said Murphy. "I am excited about the changes and believe it will make for more efficient management of our department. More members of the senior staff will have direct responsibility for sports and the coaches should receive more individualized attention from administrators."

Steve Green, who has been with Northwestern since 1995, will continue in his role as senior associate athletic director, and along with his current finance and personnel duties will oversee softball, as well as videography and strength and conditioning.

Nancy Lyons, who is currently in her eighth year as senior women's administrator, will now oversee five sports and compliance.

Brad Hurlbut, who joined the Northwestern staff in 1995 as director of media services and then was elevated to associate athletic director for external affairs in 2000, was promoted to associate athletic director for intercollegiate administration. Hurlbut will now administer five sports, the spirit squads, as well as the recreation program.

With Hurlbut's promotion, a search will begin immediately for an associate athletic director for external affairs. That position will oversee marketing and promotions and media services, as well as five sports.

Murphy, who is completing his first year as Northwestern's director of athletics, will continue to administer football, men's basketball and academic services, along with women's basketball and sports medicine.
