WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.--It was the Wildcats doing the steamrolling today.
After earning the doubles point, Northwestern's seventh-ranked swept the singles matches to pick up a 7-0 win over No. 52 Purdue. NU improved to 13-3 (3-0 Big Ten), while the Boilermakers dropped to 7-8 (2-2).
"I never expect anything," said head coach Claire Pollard when asked about the one-sided victory. "We just got on top of them right from the start and just rolled."
And right from the start the team did. Second-ranked Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) and Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Epsom) edged Gretchen Haynor and Melissa Woods 8-6 at No. 1, and Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) churned out an 8-5 win over Shawna Zuccarini and Hala Sufi at No. 2, for NU's doubles point.
In singles, five Wildcats managed straight-set wins, including Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and Connie Chiang (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West), who won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 and 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6, respectively. Chiang's win also was her seventh-straight in dual matches.
Third-ranked Grier added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sufi at No. 1, while Prousis knocked out Amy Walgenbach 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
Rush, ranked No. 38, clinched the team's sixth-consecutive triumph with her 6-0, 6-3 decision over Haynor at No. 2.
Peisel completed the shutout by outlasting Alyssa Rodriguez 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4.
"The windy conditions were tough, but I am happy with the big win," said Pollard. "Our discipline and resolve were instrumental in our victory."
The Wildcats now head to Champaign, Ill., for an 11 a.m. match against No. 24 Illinois on April 3.
