EVANSTON, Ill. - Indiana outlasted Northwestern in a back-and-forth battle, winning game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 4-3, at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston. The Hoosiers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to even the four-game series record at one game apiece. NU blanked IU in Friday's game 2-0.
Just like it had done in game one of the series, NU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Dan Pohlman laced a single up the middle, scoring Lieberman from second base. Lieberman reached on a single of his own and moved to second on Matt Brimmer's sacrifice bunt.
Indiana answered with a run in the top of the second as a one-out walk came around to score on a lazy two-out single to right field.
NU did not stay down long as third baseman Josh Lieberman hit a two-out single through the left side, scoring Anthony Wycklendt from third base. Wycklendt doubled off the right field wall to lead off the inning and moved to third on Caleb Fields' sacrifice bunt.
In a back-and-forth battle, IU tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning as a lead off walk came around to score on a one out single to center field.
Indiana took the lead in the top of the fifth inning as a Corby Heckman sacrifice fly scored Reggie Watson from third. Watson singled and moved to third on Ryan Parker's double to right field.
The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Jason Krynski tattooed a line-drive home run over the center field fence. It was Krynski's fourth round-tripper of the season.
In the sixth, Indiana took the lead for good, plating a run on two straight singles with a stolen base sandwiched between.
In the ninth, Krynski sent a towering fly ball to deep center field, but it was not enough as NU stranded a runner on third to end the game.
