EVANSTON, Ill -- Sophomore Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Epsom) has been named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week for leading Northwestern to the regular-season conference championship. The honor is her second of the year and the third of her Wildcat career.
"Cristelle continues to play the kind of tennis we know she is capable of," head coach Claire Pollard said. "Her performance this year has been a big reason for the team's success."
Grier helped Northwestern to a 20-4 mark (9-1 Big Ten) in the final weekend of the 2004 season. Last year's Big Ten Freshman and Athlete of the Year won both her No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches against Michigan and Michigan State.
The sophomore defeated Michigan's Michelle DaCosta 6-2, 6-3 and paired with Jessica Rush to knock off DaCosta and Kara Delicata, 8-2. Against Michigan State, Grier beat Keri Thompson 6-3, 6-3 in singles and then bested Thompson and Caroline Lay 8-3 in doubles with Rush.
Grier extended her singles winning streak to 15 (33-3 overall) and has never lost a conference singles match in her career.
