EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern has named Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) and Ashley Gersuk (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Brauer dominated the Samford Bulldogs last Friday afternoon, throwing seven complete innings of one-run baseball. The run was unearned as Brauer gave up just six hits and struck out 11 in NU's 6-2 win. His 11 strikeouts were a career high and season high for the Wildcats.
For the sophomore, it was his second game with double-digit strikeouts. Brauer lowered his season ERA to 2.96 in 24.1 innings pitched. In those 24.1 innings, he has given up just 16 hits and struck out 26.
Gersuk spearheaded the Northwestern defense against No. 15 Ohio State Sunday afternoon in Columbus, coming up with 12 saves and allowing just six goals-including a first-half shutout. NU head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller also credited the junior goalkeeper's poise with being a factor as Northwestern was consistently able to break out of its own zone; the 'Cats were not credited with a bad clear all day.
This week, Gersuk also was named American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week as well as womenslacrosse.com's National Player of the Week.
