MIAMI, Fla.--Northwestern's sixth-ranked women's tennis team opened up its spring schedule with a warm and breezy match in Miami, Fla., downing DePaul 6-1.

The Wildcats (11-3) were down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, in which second-ranked Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Epsom) and Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) captured the only win for NU, an 8-1 whipping of Marina Parashkevova and Petra Rehusova at No. 1.

"The wind was strong, and it may have affected our doubles play," said head coach Claire Pollard. "Nevertheless, I thought we bounced back well in singles."

As stated, the 'Cats regrouped and stormed the Blue Demons (11-7) with a shutout in singles. Third-ranked Grier and 38th-ranked Rush both held strong to win their matches, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 and 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2, respectively.

Meanwhile, Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) both were able to churn out victories after their loss in doubles. The former routed Natalie Matko 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, while the latter cruised past Brenda Leung 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.

The other two NU wins came from Ruth Barnes (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College), who beat Karen Falduto 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, and Connie Chiang (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West), who topped Rehusova 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.

Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday at Combe Tennis Center, where it will take on No. 32 Indiana.

"I am happy to have a match under our belts before having another conference dual," said Pollard. "We now look forward to playing the Hoosiers this weekend."
