EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's seventh-ranked women's tennis team began the match with a sweep in doubles and did not let up from there in defeating Marquette 7-0 at Combe Tennis Center.

"I thought we did a good job of not looking past Marquette after our win against (then-No. 4) Washington (last week)," said head coach Claire Pollard. "We had good focus throughout the match, and that translated into a win."

The third-ranked tandem of Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) and Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) began the rout at No. 1 doubles, where they blanked Veronica Garcia Briseno and Dominika Dabrowski 8-0 for their 21st win of the season.

Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) and Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) followed with an 8-3 win over Genevieve Charron and Eva Trujillo-Herrera at No. 2. Soon after, Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and Ruth Barnes (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) clinched the sweep by taking down Callan Smith and Annabelle Espinosa 8-5 at No. 3.

Singles proved equally tough for the Golden Eagles (3-7). First, Grier stormed to a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Garcia Briseno at No. 1, then Connie Chiang (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) quickly ensued with her 6-2, 6-2 match against Francina Bonnelly at No. 6.

Rush's 6-2, 6-0 dominance over Charron at No. 2 proved to be the clincher for NU (9-3), which improves to 9-0 all-time against Marquette.

"Jessica has a tough match on Friday," said Pollard. "So I think this win today was good preparation for her."

Prousis, Peisel and Barnes all won their respective matches to complete the match shutout.

The Wildcats will play host to Wisconsin at 5 p.m. Friday at Combe Tennis Center.
