ST. LOUIS--The last two remaining Northwestern wrestlers were eliminated from competition today during the second day of the NCAA Championships, which effectively concluded the Wildcats' 2003-04 season.
"I thought the guys had a good run," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "The experience our wrestlers gained from this tournament will be invaluable next year."
Both John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) started out strong in the third round of wrestlebacks. The former churned out a 10-2 major decision over Clarion's Peter Derstine at 125 lbs., while the latter upended No. 9 seed K.C. Walsh of Boise State 10-3 at 197 lbs.
But then things did not go NU's way.
Velez, who has been riddled with injuries this season, had an injury default 6:18 into his bout against Hofstra's Tom Noto. Delguyd, meanwhile, was blanked 5-0 by Oklahoma State's Rusty Blackmon. Both 'Cats, who ended up totaling 50 victories for the season, fell just shy of earning All-America honors.
Northwestern ended up tying for 50th in the team competition with 4.5 points. Oklahoma State won its 32nd national title by earning 51.5 points more than runner-up Iowa, which had 82.
