BRADENTON, Fla. - Senior Dan Pohlman went 4-for-5 as Northwestern beat Miami (Ohio) 14-6 Friday night in the first of seven games in Bradenton, Fla. NU took advantage of seven extra base hits and seven Miami errors in route to the win. With the win, NU ups its season record to 5-7-1, while the RedHawks fall to 11-8.
Pohlman opened up the top of the second inning with his second home run of the season, blistering a 1-2 pitch over the left centerfield wall.
NU tacked on another run in the top of the fourth as a Pohlman leadoff single came around to score. After dropping a texas leaguer into center field, Pohlman stole second on the very next pitch. Left fielder Dan Brauer moved Pohlman to third on a slow roller to second base and he later scored on an error by the RedHawk third baseman.
Miami University answered with a run of its own on the bottom of the fourth, as a Jon Franzese home run made the score 2-1 NU after four complete innings.
In the fifth, third baseman Josh Lieberman hit a lead off double to center and shortstop Jon Mikrut was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Right fielder Jason Krynski hit the next pitch off the base of the left field wall, scoring Lieberman from second. Pohlman stepped up and delivered again, this time hitting a one-hopper over the left field fence for a ground-rule double. Pohlman's double scored Mikrut and Krynski and gave NU a 5-1 lead with no outs in the top of the fifth inning.
NU wasn't done, not by a long shot.
Designated hitter Anthony Wycklendt, who was robbed of a single in his previous at-bat, hit a hard ground ball up the middle that scored Pohlman. After a Miami pitching change, the wheels fell off for the RedHawks. NU went on to score five more runs on three hits and four Miami errors, three of them throwing errors. NU scored a total of nine runs in the inning, the most in a single inning this season.
Trying to mount a comeback, MU plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth, chasing Wildcat starter J.A. Happ after five complete innings. Happ gave up three runs, two earned, striking out seven and walking two. Happ has a season ERA of 2.45 in 29.1 innings pitched, striking out 37.
The Wildcats squashed any hopes the RedHawks had in a comeback, adding three insurance runs in the top of the sixth. The three runs made the score 14-3 in favor of the Wildcats. The 14 runs are the most NU has scored in a game so far this season.
Over the next four innings, Northwestern used five pitchers as Miami scored single runs in three of the final four innings.
Offensively, NU managed 11 hits, which included Pohlman's home run, a Caleb Fields triple and six doubles.
Pohlman and Krynski each tallied three RBI as Wycklendt, Mark Ori and Fields all recorded one.
Northwestern is next in action when they take on Vermont at 3 p.m.(EST) Saturday afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla.
