ST. LOUIS--John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) both went 1-1 and advanced to the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships.
Velez began the day with a 7-2 decision over Ryan McClester of The Citadel at 125 lbs. The redshirt sophomore then narrowly fell to No. 2 seed Luke Eustice of Iowa 3-1 and will now face Clarion's Peter Derstine in the wrestleback bracket.
Delguyd, on the other hand, advanced in the opposite manner at 197 lbs. First, the sophomore was defeated 12-2 by No. 3 seed Sean Stender of Northern Iowa. Fortunately, Delguyd was able to bounce back and tackle N.C. State's Zach Garren 6-3 in wrestleback competition. His next opponent is No. 9 seed K.C. Walsh of Boise State.
"John and Matt hung in tough today," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "I think both of them have great chances at placing in the tournament."
The other two NU wrestlers were not as fortunate. Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) and Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) both dropped their championship and wrestleback bouts and consequently have been eliminated from the tournament.
Competition will resume at 10 a.m. on Friday.
