GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Northwestern and the University of Florida wrapped up a three-game series at McKethan Stadium Monday night in Gainesville, Fla., with Florida winning 6-3. NU scored one in the top of the first and two in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't muster much more, falling to 2-6-1 on the season. Florida, ranked 23rd in the country, upped its season record to 11-3.
Center fielder Matt Brimmer led off the game with his first double of the season off the right field wall, missing a home run by inches. Brimmer moved to second on a Jon Mikrut sacrifice bunt and scored on a Dan Brauer ground ball error. On that play, Florida first baseman C.J. Smith misplayed the ball, redirecting the ball to the Gator second baseman who then threw it past the pitcher covering first base. Brauer moved to second on the throwing error.
Like they have done in all three games, Florida answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Right fielder Ben Harrison hit a 2-2 pitch over the right centerfield wall for the Gator run.
In the bottom of the third inning, Florida took advantage of a throwing error by starting pitcher Dan Konecny. With runners on first and second with one out, Harrison hit a groundball to Konecny, who knocked it down and threw it into right field. The two runners crossed the plate and Harrison moved to third on the throw. Harrison later scored on a sacrifice fly.
Neither team found the scoring column until the bottom of the seventh inning. Florida plated a run on two hits and a stolen base. The run made the score 5-1 in favor of the Gators.
Junior Chris Hayes relieved Konecny on the mound after the sixth inning, giving up the Gator run in the seventh. Konecny pitched six complete innings, giving up four runs (one earned), throwing 95 pitches. Konecny took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The Gators tacked one more on in the eighth as a leadoff double came around to score.
NU scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning as Dan Pohlman hit a one-out single to right field. Mark Ori followed with an RBI triple to the left field corner. Ori scored on Josh Lieberman's RBI groundout to first base.
Offensively for NU, Jason Krynski was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, ending the game 2-for-4 with a double. Krynski ended the three-game series with a .364 (4-for-11) batting average.
The 'Cats are next in action when they travel to Dothan, Ala., for the Wiregrass Classic, hosted by Troy State. NU's first game of the series is set for 2 p.m. (EST) vs. Samford University.
