UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--The match was close at one point, but then it was all Penn State.
After Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) notched a 6-4 decision over Jeremy Hart to tie the score 3-3 for Northwestern's wrestling team, the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions answered by winning the next eight bouts to claim a 42-3 victory.
"In tough matches like this, we need early momentum," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "But we just did not get it tonight, and that really hurt us."
Hayes prevented a shutout for the second time for the Wildcats (9-6, 0-5 Big Ten), in improving to 11-3 this season, including a team-best 5-0 conference record. The freshman also won the only bout against Iowa last month.
"Nick had a great performance," said Cysewski. "He is wrestling with a lot of intensity and toughness."
Penn State (10-4, 3-2) boasted several ranked wrestlers in its lineup, including No. 2 Pat Cummins at heavyweight. He pinned Michael Little (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) in 2:45 to improve to 31-0 this year.
NU heads to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
