CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina was a tough state in which to play for Northwestern's seventh-ranked women's tennis team.
One day after falling to Duke in Durham, N.C., the Wildcats dropped their second match in a row, losing to No. 9 North Carolina 5-2 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
NU (7-3), which usually finds success in doubles, this time managed just one victory, and it came at No. 3, where Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and Ruth Barnes (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) edged Sara Amundsen and Jenna Long 9-8 (6).
In singles, fourth-ranked Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) got the 'Cats on the scoreboard with her 6-3, 6-2 defeat of No. 34 Aniela Mojzis at No. 1. Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) then claimed the team's only other victory by topping No. 98 Caitlin Collins 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3.
The win for the Tarheels (9-1) was their fifth over a top-25 team this season.
The Wildcats return this week to Combe Tennis Center, where they will entertain No. 5 Washington at 11 a.m. Saturday.
