EVANSTON, Ill.--It was a disappointing Senior Day for Northwestern's wrestling team.
Seeking their first Big Ten win, the Wildcats instead won just two bouts en route to being defeated 37-7 by No. 3 Michigan at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"I thought we wrestled with more intensity than we have in the past," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "I hope we can build upon this entering the postseason."
Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) earned the first victory for NU (9-9, 0-8 Big Ten) with his 8-5 decision over Chase Verdoorn at 197 lbs. That win, which improved the sophomore's record to 22-5, brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Wolverines after two bouts.
Three bouts later, Jon Ott (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) picked up his second conference win by churning out a 9-0 major decision over Chase Metcalf at 133 lbs.
The 'Cats, down 16-7, appeared to have a chance at a comeback with five bouts remaining. But the Wolverines (17-3, 7-1) did not let up and swept the rest of the match. Nolan Walther (Anchorage, Alaska/Anthony J. Dimond) closed out the dual by falling 8-6 to 17th-ranked Nick Roy at 174 lbs. As a result, the four Northwestern seniors that competed lost.
"It was a good four years for the seniors," said Cysewski. "I know those guys wanted to accomplish more, but they are not done yet. We still have the Big Ten Championships and hopefully the NCAA Championships."
The Wildcats will take a break until they compete in the Big Ten Championships, held March 6-7 in Columbus, Ohio.
