MADISON, Wis.--With a 6-0 deficit to begin the match, Northwestern's wrestling team was unable to dig itself out its hole in falling to No. 13 Wisconsin 28-6.
"Anytime you are down (in score) going into a match, it hurts you," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "The guys tried to make up for it, but we just could not get it done. We did not have enough intensity tonight."
The Badgers (17-6, 4-4 Big Ten) won the first four bouts to jump to a 13-0 lead. During that run, Wisconsin was docked a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct by Ralph DeNisco at 174 lbs.
Michael Little (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) put NU on the board after the fifth bout with his 3-1 overtime decision over Jareck Horton at heavyweight. The senior ended a four-bout losing streak in improving to 13-11 this season.
The 'Cats (9-8, 0-7) then forfeited at 125 lbs., which gave UW a 19-3 advantage with four bouts remaining. Josh Ballard (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad) helped Northwestern cut down on the lead by earning a 6-2 decision over Tony Turner at 149 lbs.
Unfortunately, that was the last victory for NU, as Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) closed the match with a 5-1 loss to Tyler Turner at 157 lbs.
"Losing the close bouts really made the difference," said Cysewski. "It becomes a snowball effect, and the pressure keeps rising on each subsequent bout."
The Wildcats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena for their final match of the season, taking on No. 3 Michigan at 2 p.m. Sunday.
