PHOENIX, Ariz. - Northwestern University's baseball team played an exhibition game vs. the University of British Columbia, losing 23-2 Sunday afternoon. The game was played at Papago Park #2 in Phoenix, Ariz. It was the fourth and final game of NU's trip to the Grand Canyon State. The Wildcats went 1-2 in the three previous games.
In today's game, not much went well for the Wildcats. Freshman George Kontos started on the mound and pitched four-plus innings. The Illinois native gave up eight runs, but only four were earned as errors plagued NU all game. Kontos struck out three.
Evan Blesoff, Chris Davidson and Chris Hayes combined to pitch the next two innings, not allowing a run and only giving up one hit.
Mark Ori, Bobby Ferla and Julio Siberio pitched the final three innings, as all three struggled. The three combined to give up 15 runs (10 earned), while walking five.
On the other side of the diamond, Thunderbird pitchers held NU to two runs on seven hits. They walked just one in the game.
Offensively for NU, Dan Pohlman was the only Wildcat to record multiple hits as he finished the day 2-for-2 with a walk. Ori recorded the only RBI for NU, scoring Dan Brauer from third on a groundout.
Statistics in this game do not count toward Northwestern's final totals.
NU is next in action this weekend when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to play in the Ultimate Dugout Baseball Fiesta. The Wildcats open against Nebraska at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20.
