EVANSTON, Ill. - The 2003-04 women's basketball season is winding down, with only five regular season matchups remaining, including Thursday's game with the Indiana Hoosiers. NU is coming off a 70-46 loss at then-No. 18/20 Michigan State and is looking to even the score vs. the Hoosiers, who took January's game in overtime, 58-55.
Northwestern has looked to the upperclassmen in the last two games, with junior Sarah Kwasinski averaging 14.5 ppg in that span. The center currently leads the 'Cats in league scoring with 9.7 ppg as well as blocks (2.0 pg).
Senior Michelle Zylstra had a career night at Michigan State, scoring 18 to shatter her previous record of 17, including a career-tying four 3's. Fifteen of her 18 game points as well as three of her four from beyond the arc came in the second.
Indiana is riding a five-game losing streak, with four of those losses at the hands of the Big Ten's best: Purdue, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State. The Hoosiers most recently lost to Illinois by the score of 64-52.
Jenny DeMuth and Cyndi Valentin are averaging double figures for IU. DeMuth leads with 18.6 ppg as well as a team-high 7.5 boards, while Valentin averages 14.9 ppg and 3.4 rebounds.
A LOOK AHEAD
NU returns to Welsh-Ryan on Sunday vs. Purdue before closing out the regular season with three on the road (Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan). February 15 (vs. the Boilermakers) will serve as senior night, honoring Michelle Zylstra, Kristin Ambrose and Suzi Sutton.
