EVANSTON, Ill. - The third session of the 42nd Midlands Championships came to a close Thursday afternoon and defending champion Illinois holds the top spot in the overall team standings with 122.5 points. Northwestern received strong performances from a number of Wildcats to move up to No. 7 overall with 60.5 points.
No. 7 seed Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) ran his record in the tournament to 4-0 by winning his semifinal matchup, advancing to the title match at 174 lbs. Herbert will face No. 5 seed Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan tonight.
No. 10 seed Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) also helped the Wildcats' point total by pinning Matt Weight of Illinois in his first match of the day at 5:27. He later fell to Sean Stender of Northern Iowa, 5-2, but Delguyd gave the `Cats a huge boost with a win in the seventh-place match. There, he upset No. 8 seed Joel Flaggert of Oklahoma.
No. 11 seed Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) looked to be down-and-out late in his first match of the day, but the freshman recorded the go-ahead points with eight seconds remaining to win 6-5. Tamillow followed that performance by grinding out a 1-0 victory over Alex Picazo of Ohio State.
Tamillow dropped his next match to No. 4 seed Eric Bradley of Penn State in a close 7-6 battle, but his two victories have helped NU further cement a top-10 finish.
No. 11 seed Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) fell to Matt Lebe of West Virginia, 9-1. No. 8 seed Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward)
