EVANSTON, Ill. -

Day one of the 42nd Midlands Championships is in the books and the Wildcats currently sit in the top-10 of the overall team standing in ninth place. NU has 33.5 total points.

No. 7 seed Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) is the only 'Cat still in the championship portion of the tournament. He is set to face No. 6 seed Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals of the 174 lb. weight class in session three, which begins at Noon Thursday, Dec. 30.

Herbert won his first two matches of the day handily, moving to a third-round showdown with No. 2 seed Pete Friedl of Illinois. Friedl entered the season highly touted after earning All-America Honors in 2004 and placing seventh at the NCAA Championships. But Herbert completed one of the biggest upsets of the day with a 5-2 decision over his familiar Big Ten foe.

Four additional `Cats will compete on day two of the tournament.

After dropping his opening match of the day, Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) is charging in the consolation bracket with four consecutive victories at 157 lbs. Kimberlin is set to face No. 7 seed Matt Lebe of West Virginia in session three.

No. 8 seed Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward) won his first two matches of the day convincingly, but fell in a close match to No. 1 seed Nate Gallick of Iowa State, 7-5. Lang, at 141 lbs., will move to the consolation bracket in session three and take on CJ Ettleson of Northern Iowa.

No. 11 seed Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) fell to Kurt Backes of Iowa State in his third round match, 11-7. Tamillow, a 184-pounder, will next face Alex Lammers of Central Michigan, who has won his past two matches by pinning his opponents.

NU's final remaining competitor is No. 10 seed Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield), who fell in the third round to No. 2 seed JD Bergman of Ohio State. Delguyd, at 197 lbs., will look to rebound against Matt Weight of Illinois in session three.

Session three begins at Noon tomorrow. Then in the evening, the championship matches will highlight session four, with an awards ceremony to follow.

Additional Notes from Day One...

- Nine of the 10 No. 1 seeds remain in the tournament. The only wrestler to knock off a No. 1 seed was No. 8 RJ Boudro, a 174-pounder from Michigan State, who defeated Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa, 5-2.

- Jon Trenge of Lehigh, 197 lbs., is one win away from earning a spot in the Midlands' prestigious "20 in 4 Club." The distinction recognizes wrestlers with a minimum of 20 wins over the course of four Midlands Championships. Trenge would become only the 17th wrestler to accomplish the feat.

- Pennsylvania's Matt Feast, the No. 1 seeded heavyweight, earned his 100th-career college victory with his first round victory over Chad Barkalow of Iowa.

- Central Michigan tops the team charts with 74.5 points. The Big Ten Conference currently has seven teams in the top-10 standings.
