EVANSTON, Ill. -
As the first session of the 42nd Midlands Championships came to a close Wednesday, Northwestern found itself in a tie for seventh place with Iowa State in the overall team standings. The two teams are knotted at 25.0 points apiece. Northern Iowa is the current leader of the championships with 34.5 total points.
Six Wildcats won their first two matches of the day, helping NU to a seventh-place standing at the end of session one: No. 3 seed John Velez (125 lbs.) (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings), No. 8 seed Ryan Lang (141 lbs.) (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward), No. 10 seed Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central), No. 7 seed Jake Herbert (174 lbs.) (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), No. 11 seed Mike Tamillow (184 lbs.) (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and No. 10 seed Matt Delguyd (197 lbs.) (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield)
Four additional Wildcats added six more wins between them in the first session for a total of 18 Wildcat victories.
Dan Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) won his first round match and added another victory in the consolation bracket. No. 11 seed Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) at 157 lbs. fell in his first-round match, but the senior responded with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
NU's heavyweights tallied some key points for the team as well. Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) won his opening match against Sean Barnes of Chicago, 3-0. Scott Johnson (Kanab, Utah/Kanab) pinned his opponent, Eric Parker of Cal-Bakersfield, at 3:43.
Jon Trenge, the No. 1 seed at 197 lbs. from Lehigh, inched closer to becoming a member of the Midlands' prestigious "20 in 4 Club" with a pair of victories.
