NEWARK, Del. -- Led by repeat champion John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings), six Wildcats earned championships in their weight classes and Northwestern ran away with the team title at the 14-team Beast of the East Invitational in Newark, Del.
NU finished with 162.5 points, 61.5 points ahead of Bloomsburg University and North Carolina, which both finished in second position with 101 points. Last year, the Wildcats placed fourth (80 points), 46.5 points behind 2003 champion Pittsburgh.
An NU wrestler advanced to the title round in eight of the possible 10 divisions, while a total of 10 Wildcats placed.
Velez (125 lbs.), Greg Hagel (149 lbs.) (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy), Mike Kimberlin (157 lbs.) (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara), Jake Herbert (174 lbs.) (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Mike Tamillow (184 lbs.) (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Matt Delguyd (197 lbs.) (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) all took the championships in their respective weight classes for Northwestern.
Nick Hayes (165 lbs.) (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) and Ryan Lang (141 lbs.) (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward) both earned second place in their respective divisions.
Dustin Fox (285 lbs.) (Galion, Ohio/Galion) claimed fourth place in the heavyweight division and Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) placed fifth at 133 lbs.
