Wildcats Dominate Competition at Augustana Pre-Christmas Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern improved to 3-0 on the year by dominating UW-La Crosse and host school Augustana College in the Vikings' Pre-Christmas Duals Wednesday afternoon.
In the `Cats first dual match of the day against Augustana, NU won eight of 10 weight classes. NU finished with a 37-9 victory over the Vikings.
Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Kim (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria Community) kicked things off at 149 lbs with a 15-9 major decision over Ryan McMurray. Senior Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) continued the trend at 157 lbs. with a 14-4 major decision over his opponent.
NU then suffered a defeat at 165 lbs., but redshirt freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) got his team right back on track by pinning Nate Demus in the 174 lb. weight division at 6:52.
Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) continued to impress, as the freshman notched his seventh win of the year with a 12-2 victory at 184 lbs. Classmate Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion High School) earned a pin of his own in the heavyweight division. Redshirt freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward) sealed the Vikings' fate by earning a victory at 141 lbs., and improving his individual record on the year to 8-1.
The `Cats did not ease off the gas pedal much in their second dual match against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse. NU earned a total of four major decision victories en route to the 33-9 win. Freshman Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) started the match at 149 lbs. with a 14-7 major decision over Jake Larsen. Sophomore Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) then earned his first win of the year, while Herbert, redshirt sophomore Joseph Gulotta (Meraux, La./Brother Martin) and junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) all followed with wins. Lang closed things out again with a 23-8 stomping of his opponent at 141 lbs.
Like Lang, redshirt freshman Jarred Mercado (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) also went 2-0 on the day.
The `Cats get little time to rest before traveling to Newark, Del. Friday, Dec. 17 for the Beast of the East Tournament.
