EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling hits the road for two competitions in a span of three days this week before returning home to Welsh-Ryan Arena for the 2004 Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30.
"Coming off our win against Northern Illinois, we feel pretty confident that we can continue to improve," Head Coach Tim Cysewski said. "We need to continue to build momentum as we move into the season."
The Wildcats will face UW-La Crosse and host school Augustana College in a pair of dual matches Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. NU will then travel to Newark, Del., Friday, Dec. 17. to compete in the Beast of the East Tournament.
Last year, the `Cats dominated Augustana at the NU Duals, earning a 30-9 win. Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) got things rolling with a major decision (15-1) win in the opening match. Five other `Cats--including Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) and John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings)--also won by major decision, guiding NU to victory.
At the very same duals, UW-La Crosse proved to be a much tougher match. The teams split the first four matches by decision, with Jimmy Kim (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria Community) and Kimberlin winning for NU. With NU leading by a slim margin at 15-14 going into the final match, Velez closed it out with a major-decision win.
Velez also dominated at the 2003 Beast of the East Tournament, tallying six victories en route to winning the title at 125 lbs. and helping NU to a fourth-place finish.
Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) earned a second-place finish at 197 lbs. at the tournament, while Kimberlin was the only other Wildcat to place, coming in fourth 157 lbs.
