EVANSTON, Ill. - Three Northwestern tennis players competed in the opening round of the prequalifying portion of the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday, Oct. 2.
In singles action, graduate student Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Minnesota) defeated Robyn Baker of Loyola Marymount, 7-5; 6-0. Freshman Audra Cohen (Ft. Lauderdale) continued to impress with a 6-4; 6-1 win in her opening match. Cohen is coming off a perfect 4-0 singles performance last weekend that saw her beat the No. 1 player in the country - teammate, junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney).
Junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) fell to Suzana Maksovic of Denver in her opening round match, 6-2; 6-3. But Peisel redeemed herself in doubles action when she teamed up with Vladea to defeat Porsz and Ratiu of Long Beach State, 9-8.
Grier is one of the top eight seeds in the tournament, who are set to begin play in the main draw, Thursday, Oct. 7.
