CHICAGO, Ill. -- No. 19 DePaul showed why it was the highest-scoring team in the nation last season, running away from Northwestern 118-49 Saturday night at the DePaul Athletic Center.
All 12 Blue Demons on the roster scored at least four points against the Wildcats.
"DePaul is a fantastic ballclub," NU Head Coach Beth Combs said. "We were not ready to go out and compete and we did not make the plays we had to. We did not stick to our gameplan."
The Wildcats (1-3) did get solid play from their three freshmen. Melissa Miller (Bloomington, Minn./The Breck School) was just two rebounds shy of a double-double, netting 11 points and a team-high eight boards. Kelly Rae Finley (Edina, Minn./The Breck School) scored a team-best 14 points while classmate Sara Stutz (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) poured in 13 points.
"Our three freshmen are learning to compete and have been stepping up every game," Combs said. "They will continue to get plenty of experience against a very tough schedule."
Sophomore A.J. Glasauer (Freiburg, Germany/Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium), on the floor in her first game since the season opener, paced NU with four assists. Sophomore Breanne Smilie (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Fenwick) saw her first action of the season Saturday, dishing out a pair of assists and grabbing two boards in 15 minutes of play.
DePaul (4-0) used suffocating defense to generate most of its offense, forcing 27 Northwestern turnovers while committing just 12 itself.
The Wildcats return to action at 5 p.m. Wednesday at home against Kentucky.
