EVANSTON, Ill. - After one day of rest at home, Northwestern returns to the road Sunday for Monday night's contest at West Virginia. The 'Cats, coming off a 77-65 loss at Creighton--the 2004 WNIT champions, are looking for their first win of the season against a team they have never lost to.
West Virginia opened their season Nov. 19 with a 67-39 win over UNC Greensboro. Meg Bulger carried the Mountaineers, scoring 29 points in the game. She added four boards and two steals. Sherell Sowho added 10 points and Yelena Leuchanka led West Virginia with 9 caroms.
"Playing on someone else's home court is never easy," said Head Coach Beth Combs. "We knew our nonconference slate was going to be tough, but we are going to keep playing tough and fighting every game for a win."
The 'Cats' production vs. Creighton came from seniors Sarah Kwasinski (15 points, 3 blocks) and Suzanne Morrison (14 points, 6 boards). Game captain Samantha McComb added two points and a team-leading six assists.
Freshmen Kelly Rae Finley, Melissa Miller and Sara Stutz also saw time in the game, accounting for 13 points and 12 boards.
Last year vs. the Mountaineers, Ifeoma Okonkwo and Melissa Culver led NU's offense, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Wildcats won that game 60-57. Okonkwo recorded a double-double in the contest, adding 13 boards.
WVU's Sherell Sowho knocked down 20 points in the loss. Then-senior Kate Bulger added 11 and sister Meg chipped in seven.
Looking Ahead...
Northwestern returns home Wednesday to welcome the Western Michigan Broncos for the home opener. The meeting will be the third all-time between the two teams, with NU holding a 2-0 advantage. The last time these teams met was in 1979.
Wednesday's game will be the first of four to be played in Evanston in two weeks. After playing Chicago-rival DePaul Nov. 27 in Chicago, the 'Cats will return to Welsh-Ryan for three-consecutive games: vs. Kentucky on Dec. 1 and vs. Houston and Virginia the weekend of Dec. 3 in the Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational. The only other opponent NU will face at home in the month of December is Illinois-Chicago.
