EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Tim McGarigle (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) of football and freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) of women's tennis have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
McGarigle, who was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Division I-A National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, led the Northwestern defense with a career-high 21 tackles (eight solos, 13 assists) and a pass breakup. After this past weekend's performance, McGarigle is now the Big Ten co-leader in total tackles (12.6 per game) with Ohio State's A.J. Hawk. He is averaging 7.9 solo hits per game. McGarigle now ranks eighth on NU's career tackle chart with 339 hits.
Cohen ran her singles record to 20-0 last week by defeating junior teammate Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) in the title match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships. It was Cohen's third singles title of the fall season. Cohen also won the doubles title at the Midwest Championships alongside Grier. Cohen will make a run at her fourth singles title this weekend when the 'Cats compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
