EVANSTON, Ill. - This is becoming all-too familiar. For the third time in a little over a month, freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) will battle each other for a singles title. This time, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championship is up for grabs.
The title match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Combe Tennis Center, which can be found inside the Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center (SPAC). The marquee matchup offers the NU community a great opportunity to see two of the best players in the country.
The University of Minnesota had been hosting this year's championships since Thursday, Oct. 21. But with the rare -- or as we've learned from Cohen and Grier, not so rare -- occurrence of the two finalists being from the same school, the finals match has been moved to Northwestern.
Cohen -- the No. 1 seed in the championships -- is 2-0 against the No. 2 seed Grier in the fall season. Cohen defeated Grier in the finals of the Rice Classic 6-3, 7-5. She also beat Grier 7-6 (2), 6-2 to claim the ITA All-American Singles Championship, becoming the first freshman to win the singles championship, since Duke's Ansley Cargill in 2000. With that win, she became Northwestern's first national singles champion.
Regardless of who wins today, both players have already come away from the championships with a first-place trophy. They won their first doubles title together at Minnesota Monday, Oct. 25.
