EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 1 seed freshman Audra Cohen (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), No. 2 seed junior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England, Putney) and sophomore Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) all won their first and second round matches in the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships Saturday, Oct. 23.
Cohen ran her unbeaten streak to 17-0 by defeating Nischela Reddy of Minnesota 6-1, 6-1 and Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame 6-3, 6-1.
Grier won her two matches in convincing fashion as well, beating Lindsey Adams of Ohio State 6-3, 6-2. Grier did not lose a single game in her second round match against Ivonne Andrade of Northern Illinois, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Prousis beat Debra Streifler of Michigan 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 64 before defeating Lindsay Martin of Wisconsin in the second round 6-1, 6-4.
Graduate student Valerie Vladea (Tiffin, Iowa/Minnesota) and junior Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) both went 1-1 in the main draw on Saturday. Vladea opened her day by defeating Gergana Ganeva of DePaul 6-2, 6-2, but lost in the second round to Brook Bush of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-1. Peisel took Anastasia Zhukova of Iowa the distance in her first round match, before winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Peisel fell in the round of 32 though to Cynthya Goulet of Illinois 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and junior Feriel Esseghir (Sarasota, Fla./UCLA) also competed in the main draw of 64 on Saturday. Yung fell to Katie McGaffigan of Wisconsin 6-4, 3-6, 1-6, while Esseghir lost to Keri Thompson of Michigan State 0-6, 1-6.
In doubles action, Prousis and Vladea defeated Connelly and Stastny 8-5 in their opening match, while Cohen and Grier rolled through Sufi and Wooter in their opening competition 8-2.
