EVANSTON, Ill. - Ernie Banks -- the man who used to say "let's play two" -- would be happy with the Northwestern women's cross country team's plans Saturday.
The Wildcats will run twice that day, with six women headed to Indiana State for the Pre-National Invitational and another 10 headed just north for the Forester Invitational. The Pre-National group will go off at 11 a.m. in the Women's Blue Race at Indiana State; the Forester harriers will also run at 11 a.m., at the Half Day Forest Preserve in Vernon Hills, Ill.
"We are working on competing," said head coach Amy Tush about her two teams.
"The group going to Pre-Nationals has some specific goals in mind," she continued. "The last time we competed in a race of this size and magnitude we kind of got swallowed up and lost. This weekend we are looking to come out hard and really make a surge at every kilometer.
"This is a very important meet for us," she continued, pointing out that it's the last meet before the Oct. 31 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. "This is a race that can help them gain some confidence. It will be a good indicator of where we are headed."
Of her Forester crew, Tush said, "We want to win that meet. This is the best group of women we have ever sent to this meet, and so I am looking for them to bring home the title."
Tush also acknowledged that more than a team honor is at stake for the group competing at the Forester.
"Some women in that group are competing to earn a spot on our Big Ten Championship squad," she said, "and so I hope to see them take advantage of the opportunity to be in Iowa City in two weeks."
