WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--Northwestern's 14th-ranked women's tennis team finally got its revenge.
After consecutive losses to William & Mary in the past two years, the Wildcats lost only three matches in dominating the Tribe 5-2. The win boosts NU's record to 2-0, while No. 8 William & Mary drops to 2-2.
"The win was very pleasing," said head coach Claire Pollard. "I thought we played a pretty good match. It was nice to get a win on the road."
In the battle of the No. 1s, fourth-ranked Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) whipped 76th-ranked Megan Muth 6-0, 6-1. No. 36 Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Lena Sherbakov at No. 2.
Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) also were successful in singles, winning at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
In doubles, top-ranked Grier and Rush made swift work of 11th-ranked Muth and Amy Wei, winning 8-3 at No. 1. Yung and Connie Chiang (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) added an 8-4 win at No. 3 to get the doubles point.
"I felt like we were in control for most of the match," said Pollard. "But you have to figure a couple of their players will step up. Still, I think we took a lot of positive things from today."
The 'Cats return home to Combe Tennis Center, where they will play New Mexico at noon Saturday.
