EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's wrestling team broke its three-match skid by trouncing Missouri Baptist 33-6 at Welsh-Ryan Arena as head coach Tim Cysewski picked up his 100th career win.
"It is a nice win for me because duals wins are always great," said Cysewski, who improves to 100-136-5 in his 14th season at NU. "But I am here to get my guys ready for the Big Ten and the NCAA Tournament. We just want to keep wrestling better and get some wins in the conference."
Added assistant coach Tony Ersland: "I am glad to see (Tim) get it--it is well-deserved. The program is definitely going in a good direction right now. He has worked very hard to get to this point."
The Wildcats (9-4, 0-3 Big Ten) made it easy for Cysewski by starting the match on a high note as heavyweight Michael Little (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) pinned Jaren Bonell in 2:25. Josh Ballard (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad) also won by fall, pinning Charles Michael in 3:47 at 149 lbs. Ballard's win gave NU a 24-0 lead.
The Spartans (12-7) avoided the shutout with their wins at 174 and 184 lbs., the eighth and ninth bouts, respectively.
Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) closed out the match with his 9-5 decision over Kenny Holmes.
"I thought we wrestled pretty well overall," said Cysewski. "The guys stayed focused against Missouri Baptist, even after two tough losses."
NU will remain at home when it faces Illinois at 2 p.m. Feb. 1 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
