SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Northwestern's men's tennis began its season on a high note by routing Weber State 7-0 Friday night.
All four Wildcat freshmen were able to play, including Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College), who defeated Jonathan Engelbrect 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Classmate Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) chipped in with his 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win over Mathas Saheron at No. 2.
"We got the job done," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "We got everybody a shot in the lineup. I am also pleased we had a chance to get acclimated to the high altitude in preparation for our match tomorrow (against Utah)."
NU also had no trouble at doubles, giving up a total of just seven points. Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Friedland led the charge with an 8-2 pounding of Engelbrect and Andrew Corlett at No. 1.
With the victory, Northwestern gains a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Big Sky Conference's Wildcats (0-1).
NU (1-0) will stay in Salt Lake City to take on Utah (0-0) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
