EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's three-match winning streak came to an end as Michigan State defeated the Wildcats, 3-0 in both teams' Big Ten opener at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex.
Michigan State's Andrea Sied got the Spartans on the board in the 11th minute when she fired a shot off the free kick from the left side into the back of the net, giving MSU a 1-0 advantage.
That was all the Spartans would need as they held the 'Cats scoreless. NU applied strong pressure early in the match, tallying seven shots on goal in the first half, but they were unable to get anything past MSU goalkeeper Stacy Heller.
NU head coach Jenny Haigh was disappointed with her team's intensity in the second half.
"It was kind of a tale of two halves," Haigh said. "At times in the second half we really lost our emotion and our determination. We finished the game very flat."
MSU's Tiffany Laskowski tallied a goal at 53:41 to give the Spartans a 2-0 cushion.
Sied added her second goal of the match in the 80th minute to push the Michigan State lead to 3-0. Laskowski had an assist on Sied's second goal, giving her three points in the match.
Freshman goalie Whitney Jones made two saves in the losing effort, while Heller had seven stops for the Spartans.
NU is back in action Sunday, Sept. 21 when they square off with Michigan at the LBT Sports Complex. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
