EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's field hockey team selected seniors Diane Provencher (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and Katie Walshauser (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) as their 2003 captains. The student-athletes were elected by their teammates.
Provencher started 18 of NU's 19 games a year ago and was a key element in the Wildcat defense. Walshauser was slowed by an early season injury that limited her to playing to 11 games. She did make three late-season starts and scored the game-winning goal in NU's 1-0 win over Indiana.
Seniors Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and Stacy Spenser (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) received NU's annual coaches awards. Head coach Marisa Didio and associate head coach Kelly McCollum each chose a player they felt exemplified the spirit of Wildcat field hockey, both on and off the playing field.
Sophomore Rachel Cody (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) was the recipient of the 2003 Senior Award. This award is annually given to an underclassman (by the seniors) for their unselfish commitment to the team and program as a whole.
NU also recognized Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Provencher for their improvement over the spring quarter. Cooper, the Wildcats main offensive threat last season, was named as the most improved 'attack' player, while Provencher garnered best defensive player accolades for the spring.
