EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's tennis player Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) lost to Julia Schruff (GER) 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 today in the second round of qualifying play at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships. With the loss, Grier was eliminated from the Championships.

The freshman got off to a fast start in qualifying play, dispatching of Anna Hawkins (GBR) 6-3, 6-0 Tuesday in first-round action. A win today and again tomorrow would have qualified Grier for play in the main draw at Wimbledon, which begins June 23.

The trip to Wimbledon capped off an outstanding freshman year for Grier, who earned Big Ten Freshman and Player of the Year accolades, as well as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Player to Watch award.
