ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Northwestern scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Michigan 8-3 in extra innings. NU bounced back after losing game one, 3-0, to up its record to 24-19 overall, 14-11 in the Big Ten.
The Wildcats rode the arm of freshman Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) as the left-hander allowed just one hit after the second inning. It was his third complete game of the year.
Brauer struggled early, allowing three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. Starting in the third, Brauer faced just three over the minimum in the final six innings, to improve his record to 5-2 on the season.
In the top half of the next inning, NU answered with three runs of its own, tying the score at 3-3. The Wildcats capitalized on three hits and took advantage of a Michigan throwing error and a passed ball.
The score remained 3-3 for the next four innings until Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) hit a game-winning RBI single to center in the top of the eighth inning. Michigan brought in a left-handed reliever to face the left-handed hitting Ori. Ori was the only hitter the reliever faced.
Ori's hit brought in catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) from third as Padgett reached on a single to center. Padgett moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on Eric Roeder's (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) sacrifice bunt. Padgett went 3-for-4 in the game.
After taking the lead, NU poured it on, plating four more runs in the inning, as the Wolverines were guilty of two errors. Playing with extra outs, junior Josh Lieberman (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) hit his fifth sacrifice fly of the season as senior Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) also hit an RBI single.
The two teams wrap up their four-game series with a single nine-inning affair beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
